Austin

I took a page out of Raine’s book and decided to shower, too. After I freshened up and got changed, I went to the one place in this entire village where I could think—the rooftop of the training center. This had been my home for a long time. All I needed was a small apartment in the training quarters; on the other hand, Daniel lived in a modest cottage on the village border.

I wondered if Raine would be finding a permanent residence anytime soon. Would she leave the building and move out? My stomach dipped. I couldn’t bear to be away from her. The very moment she walked into my life all those years ago I knew. I just knew I would never look at a woman the way I looked at her; she made me feel like I had taken my first breath of life. I set my emotions aside, tucking them way down deep to do my job. I trained her to be one of the best, and she was, but there was more to her than that. I felt it deep in my bones.

I looked out over the city, beyond into Freedom City. I would have to take her there soon. She needed to see how truly magnificent it was, including the people I wanted her to meet.

I heard the door open behind me; steady footsteps made there way over to the wall. Daniel leaned against the brick balcony. k«1«2

“All good over there?” I nodded towards the Lost City.

“Nah, Yabe found at least two open portals to the Underworld. He’s sent for two of his brothers, Rael and Firth, to close them. He thinks more will be opened. Yabe also thinks they’re going to keep trying for Freedom city. For what… we’re not sure. Also, Niall was nowhere to be found. Maybe he’s just hiding out for a while and I am overthinking it.” Silence fell between us. “It’s getting harder, isn’t it?” Daniel asked.

I nodded silently. “Yes. Ever since the Creator gave her the gift of white light, I’m struggling to stay away,” I admitted.

Daniel rested a hand on my shoulder. “I don’t know what to say, friend. The Creator has paired them together. There’s a bond there I myself can’t even understand. Kale’s a warrior if I ever saw one, yet while we were in the Lost City, the boy was almost vomiting as if the distance from her was too much to handle,” he shook his head. “Heck, even I felt bad for the guy.”

“Maybe Henry got it wrong. Maybe it’s the wrong match up,” I reasoned.

I desperately tried to come up with a motive for why they were put together. Thing was, I had known for a few years they were to be partnered up, but I never expected her to be given the white fire, like me. Weren’t we supposed to be together? I felt something at the graduation ceremony, a link between us that I couldn’t explain.

“You trying to dump me as your partner?” he laughed.
